Institute Of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology
The Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (IMBB), The University of Lahore, was established in 2004. It started academic programmes of postgraduate teaching and research degree leading to M. Phil. and Ph. D. in the subjects of biochemistry, physiology and molecular biology and biotechnology. Later M. Sc. and B.Sc Hons (4 year) were also added. It is the first institute of its kind established in the private sector. It fulfills the requirements for advancements in the subjects of biological sciences, which is now the most important area of studies for the 21st century associated to economic and industrial development of the country. Efforts are under way to upgrade the existing facilities at the IMBB to the status of a centre of excellence.
The subjects of biochemistry and molecular physiology has emerged new trends in molecular biology & biotechnology Curricula with special emphasis on cellular mechanism leading to function in living organisms. The institute’s focus on these areas in conjunction to developments in recombinant DNA technology, monoclonal antibody, immunology, immunoassays and protein sequencing etc. to study the structural and functional aspects. These basic and applied research fields have helped to explore innovative pathways of research fields to understand genomics and proteomics. At present this institute is actively engaged in studies related to male infertility, cell receptor studies, lipid-membrane-receptors interactions, cancer, molecular detection of infectious diseases, application of immunoassays in diagnostic fields & industrial uses.

BSc (Hon) Biochemistry

Programme Description:
The four-year degree programme in biochemistry consists of 8 semesters comprising of 18 weeks each. This includes 16 weeks teaching and 2 weeks for examination etc. There be 2 semesters comprising of a winter semester (January – May) and a Fall Semester (August – December). Short summer semester comprising of 8 weeks each year to take failed courses and specified new courses. A student with biochemistry major may opt for two of the three minor subjects i.e. physiology, microbiology & chemistry. Each minor subject will comprise of 12 credit hours. In addition to the major and minor subjects it will be mandatory for every student to take Islamiat, Pakistan Studies, English, Mathematics, Statistics and computer science courses as prescribed in university calendar. The total number of these compulsory courses will not be exceeding 24 credit hours. In total 134 credit hours are required with minimum CGPA of 2.0 (60% or C grade) and no F Grade.
