On November 27, 2018, Professor Dr. Muhammad Ashraf, Pro-Rector Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (IMBB) and Centre for Research in Molecular Medicine (CRIMM) as well as Director Quality Enhancement Cell (QEC) at UOL, was declared Highly Cited Researcher by the Clarivate Analytics (Thomson Reuters USA) for the Year 2018.

According to its website, Clarivate Analytics, is the global leader in providing trusted insights and analytics to accelerate the pace of innovation. Its list of Highly Cited Researchers for 2018 identifies scientists and social scientists who have demonstrated significant influence through publication of multiple highly cited papers during the last decade. Researchers are selected for their exceptional performance in one or more of 21 fields used in Essential Science Indicators (ESI) or across several fields.

Dr. Ashraf is one of the only 4 Pakistani scientists who have been declared highly cited researchers by the Clarivate Analytics. “This is a rare accomplishment and hence astounding achievement for me and the Government of Pakistan that 4 Pakistani researchers have been included in the list of top 1% of scientists of the world,” he said while speaking to The Spectacle on December 10, 2018.  “I consider this as the biggest achievement in my life.” He added.

According to the Highly Cited Researchers 2018 Executive Summary Report published by the Clarivate Analytics and Web of Science, approximately 6,000 researchers are named Highly Cited Researchers in 2018; some 4,000 in specific fields and about 2,000 for Cross-Field performance. This is the first year that researchers with Cross-Field impact are identified and Dr. Ashraf was in this category. His main areas of research are; agriculture, biotechnology, environmental science and ecology, and plant sciences.

In 2007, Dr. Ashraf was also ranked the top scientist of the OIC 57 countries when he scored 4,306 points in Biological Sciences at the Organization of Islamic Cooperation's Standing Committee on Scientific and Technological Cooperation (COMSTECH) for the promotion and cooperation of science and technological activities among the OIC member states.

In his new capacity as Pro-Rector and Director QEC, the internationally recognized researcher aims at positioning UOL in the top universities of the world.
