The Department of Mathematics
realises its responsibility to ensure long-term
vitality of mathematical sciences; that it should
foster the development of mathematical scientists
as future scholars, teachers and organisational
leaders as well as maintaining the interdisciplinary
collaborations that play a central role in modern
society.
Highly qualified
and competent professionals are engaged in teaching
and supervision of research in modern areas of
mathematical science. The department is active
also in collaborative research projects with foreign
professionals.
Bachelors
of Science (Honors) in Mathematics
After
consideration of the importance of mathematical
science the department has launched the four years
BSc degree programme with specialisation in Mathematics
in accordance with the curricular guidelines provided
by the Higher Education Commission (HEC). The
BSc programme has been introduced by the HEC in
order to bring the bachelors degree at par with
international standards (16 years of education).
The BSc degree will be followed by 2 years MS
degree in Mathematics. The MS degree programme
is being planned to commence from year 2010, which
will be deemed equivalent to the current M Phil
degree; students on completion of MS degree will
be able to directly enroll onto a Ph.D. programme.
Eligibility
for BSc Programme
Candidates holding
at least second-class FA / F Sc or equivalent
qualification with Mathematics may apply for admission
to the BSc (Honors) programme provided they bear
good aptitude in Mathematics.
Programme
Structure
The
BS program is spread over 8 semesters interspersed
with short summer semesters. The degree is to
be awarded on successful completion of 144 credit
hours. On completion of first four semesters,
a student can opt for the award of a 2 years BSc
degree.
Master
of Science in Mathematics
Eligibility
for M. Sc. (Mathematics) Programme
Candidates holding at least a second
class B.Sc. (2 years) or equivalent degree with
A & B courses of Mathematics from some institutions
recognised by the HEC may apply for admission
to this M.Sc. programme provided they bear strong
aptitude in Mathematics. Candidates working in
some public/private educational institution or
R&D organisation may also applu through proper
channels; such candidates are required to submit
No Objection Certificate from their employers.
Programme
Structure
The M.Sc. (Mathematics) programme is a full time
programme (60 credit hours) spread over 4 semesters.
M.Sc.
course weightage
Each taught course is of maximum 100 marks, whereas
dissertation will be of 200 marks. In each course,
the weight-age given to various activities is
as follows:
Assignments: 5%
Term Paper: 10%
Presentation: 5%
Quizzes: 10%
Mid-semester exam: 20%
End-semester exam: 50%
M.Phil.
- leading to Ph.D. programme
Design of the
Programme
The M.Phil. leading to Ph.D. programme
in Mathematics has been designed to enable Mathematics
students to gain advanced knowledge and hands-on
research experience in modern areas of Mathematics.
The students are initially enrolled for M.Phil
program that consists of 1 year (2 semesters;
each of 18 weeks duration) of course work I of
24 credit hours. A student whose performance during
the course work (for M.Phil.: first 2 semesters)
appeared to be convincing and s/he scores a CGPA
equal to or more than 3.0 (out of 4) may opt and
formally apply to Recotr of the University (through
Head of the Department) for getting his/her status
upgraded from M.Phil. to Ph.D. candidate. A student
who gets the status of Ph.D. candidate would have
to attent course work II of 15 credit hours; courses
in course work II shall be of specialised nature
and offered on recommendation of his/her tentative
supervisor(s) and onward approval of the Departmental
Advisory Committee. The course work II for Ph.D.
degree will be followed by research work (Ph.D.
Thesis) of 30 credit hours. The M.Phil. candidates
who could not get their status upgraded (to Ph.D.
candidates) would be allowed another 1-2 years
for M.Phil thesis of 20 credit hours; such candidates
will be awarded M.Phil degree on their satisfactory
performance.
Eligibility
of the M.Phil. leading to Ph.D. Programme
Persons holding a good M.Sc. or equivalent degree
in Mathematics recognised by the Higher Education
Commission (HEC), Pakistan, may apply for admission
to this program provided they bear strong aptitude
in Mathematics; research experience will be preferred.
Persons working in some public/private educational
institution or R&D organisation may also apply
through proper channels; such candidates are required
to submit No Objection Certificate from
their employers.
Programe
structure
The M.Phil. programe is 40 credit hours full time
spread over 4 semesters (each of 18 weeks duration).
This consists of two phases: Course work and Research
work.
