IMBB/CRiMM installs NMR equipment

The UOL Institute of Molecular Biology (IMBB)/ Centre of Research in Molecular Medicine (CRiMM) recently installed Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. The Patron-in-Chief, Mr. M.A. officially inaugurated this state-of-the-art apparatus at the research centre. Most commonly known as NMR spectroscopy or magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) is a spectroscopic technique to observe local magnetic fields around atomic nuclei.

According to Prof. Dr. Arif Malik, an HEC approved research supervisor with vast expertise in biochemistry, NMR spectroscopy is the definitive method to identify monomolecular organic compounds. He adds that biochemists use NMR to identify proteins and other complex molecules. “Besides identification, NMR spectroscopy provides detailed information about the structure, dynamics, reaction state, and chemical environment of molecules. The most common types of NMR are proton and carbon-13 NMR spectroscopy, but it is applicable to any kind of sample that contains nuclei possessing spin. NMR spectroscopy is quantitative and does not require extra steps for sample preparation, such as separation or derivation,” Prof. Malik explains. 

He adds that NMR tools are applicable to metabolomics research and it helps to explain various properties of the molecules in the liquid phase.

“With the help of NMR one can observe very small and very large molecules along with their dynamics, structure and more at a single molecule level. It can be used at variety of temperatures (77K to 350K). It can also be used to detect various novel compounds of clinical interests,” Prof. Malik adds.
