Institute Of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology

The Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (IMBB), The University of Lahore, was established in 2004. It started academic programmes of postgraduate teaching and research degree leading to M. Phil. and Ph. D. in the subjects of biochemistry, physiology and molecular biology and biotechnology. Later M. Sc. and B.Sc Hons (4 year) were also added. It is the first institute of its kind established in the private sector. It fulfills the requirements for advancements in the subjects of biological sciences, which is now the most important area of studies for the 21st century associated to economic and industrial development of the country. Efforts are under way to upgrade the existing facilities at the IMBB to the status of a centre of excellence.

The subjects of biochemistry and molecular physiology has emerged new trends in molecular biology & biotechnology Curricula with special emphasis on cellular mechanism leading to function in living organisms. The institute’s focus on these areas in conjunction to developments in recombinant DNA technology, monoclonal antibody, immunology, immunoassays and protein sequencing etc. to study the structural and functional aspects. These basic and applied research fields have helped to explore innovative pathways of research fields to understand genomics and proteomics. At present this institute is actively engaged in studies related to male infertility, cell receptor studies, lipid-membrane-receptors interactions, cancer, molecular detection of infectious diseases, application of immunoassays in diagnostic fields & industrial uses.

Bio-Chemistry, Molecular Biology,
Bio-Technology & Physiology

FACT FILE:
Short title: MSc
Type and duration: Full- time, 2 years
Entry requirements: BSc in relevant field
Other Qualification: Bachelors degree
Location: Lahore

Programme Description:

The Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (IMBB) is a teaching and research institute. At present, the Institute is focusing on registering students for MSc, M Phil and PhD programmes in the disciplines of Biochemistry, Physiology, Molecular Biology and Biotechnology. These areas have been identified for the reasons that limited manpower at advanced level is available in these subjects and demand for further education in these subjects is expanding rapidly.

The MSc degree programmes are on high demand in the country. Fresh graduates look for suitable places to improve their qualification and get acquainted with emerging fields in molecular biology & biotechnology in relation to physiological and biochemical needs. These are the areas on which IMBB is focusing. Most of the courses, as listed elsewhere are based on the theory and practical work.

Eligibility Criteria & Admissions :

Students seeking admission to MSc programme must fulfill the following eligibility criteria;

1.Applicant for MSc studies must have passed graduation or equivalent examination in the relevant field from a recognized university, at least 2nd Division / C grade or must hold B. Sc. (in relevant fields) or MBBS/ BDS/ DVM/ B. Pharmacy degree(s) & B. Sc. (Laboratory Technology).

2. Admissions are subject to a Test & Interview

Teaching Methodologies:

Apart from the specified curriculum for MSc degrees the institute will provide a stimulating environment for learning through efforts of motivated teachers. Programmes are devised and implemented to allow high level of scholaristic attainment. Teaching methodologies emphasize promotion of student’s learning and comprehension of the subject matter. As far as possible particular attention will be given to the application of the principles of basic and applied learning.

The methodologies employed for teaching shall emphasize development of skill of
(a) independent learning
(b) critical analysis, comprehension and solv ing of scientific problems,
(c) work planning and execution, and
(d) communication through written, oral, and electronic media.

Thus in addition to lecture work, problem solving exercises, assignments, discussions, and student seminars, research and thesis will form a central part of each programme.
