Computer Science Department holds 2nd International Conference

The Department of Computer Science and Information Technology (CS & IT), University of Lahore in collaboration with the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) held its 2nd International Conference on Advancements in Computational Science (ICACS’19) on February 18-20, 2019 at Defence Road Campus, Lahore.

The conference, aiming at providing a platform for researchers to present their latest research and ideas on modern technology from both academia and industry, had a total of 96 articles presented out of which 19 got accepted. Six major tracks which included; Human Computer Interaction, Software Engineering, Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition, Data Sciences and Knowledge Systems and Network and Communication Technologies were covered during this academic meet.

The UOL Rector, Prof. Dr.  Mujahid Kamran and the Chair IEEE Lahore Section, Dr. Amjad Hussain were the chief guests. In his speech, Dr. Hussain congratulated the ICACS’19 technical committee for organizing the second international event of such a magnitude. He emphasized the need to promote research culture in Pakistan and explained how IEEE is helping in the organization of the research based events in the region. “Research culture is vital for the development and strengthening of any country,” he added.

The General Chair ICACS’19, Associate Professor Department of CS & IT, Dr. Muhammad Atif welcomed the distinguished participants and briefly shared the statistics of the event. He extended his gratitude to the management of UOL for funding the organization of this huge platform for the Department.

Prof. Dr. Kim G. Larsen (Director ICT-Competence Centre CISS, Aalborg University, Denmark); Prof. Dr. Alessandro Ricci (University of Bologna, Italy); Prof. Dr. Hubert Roth (University of Siegen , Germany); and Prof. Dr. Pieter Cujipers (Technische Universiteit Eindhoven, Netherlands) were the keynote speakers.

The first two days of the conference comprised of four keynote speeches and parallel sessions of research paper presentations tackling the latest research and development trends. Participants, faculty members and students actively and enthusiastically attended the presentations and talks.

The chief guest and the HoD, CS & IT Dr. Muhammad Adnan Hashmi distributed the certificates and the Best Paper Awards to the guests, authors and participants on the Gala Dinner night which was held on the second night of the Conference.

The last day of the event had two tutorial sessions in which Dr. Saeed Ul Hassan (Director, Scientometrics Lab at ITU, Lahore) and Dr. Syed Atif Mehdi (Director, Centre of Robotics at UCP, Lahore) delivered their lectures and hands on training in state-of-the-art technologies.

At the closing ceremony Dr. Pieter Cujipers, Dr. Alessandro Ricci and Dr. Kim G Larsen congratulated the University for organizing such an educative event. They also promised to maintain a link between UOL and their universities in terms of research collaborations for both faculty and students.

The HoD, CS & IT and General Co-Chair ICACS’19 thanked all the invited speakers, authors and audience for their full participation and appreciated the UOL management for all the support they provided.
