CSSPR’s Research Associate Ali Zia participates in global security course
Research Associate at The University of Lahore’s Center for Security, Strategy and Policy Research (CSSPR), Mr. Syed Ali Zia Jaffery participated in the 58th International School on Disarmament and Research on Conflicts (ISODARCO) course held in Kyrenia, Northern Cyprus, from April 7 to 12, 2019. The course, titled "Global Security and Regional Disorder: Evolving Challenges and Elusive Solutions”, was attended by academics and students from the United States, United Kingdom, South Africa, Cameroon, Nigeria, Austria, Russia and Italy.

Mr. Ali, who was selected through a rigorous open selection process, also presented a scholarly paper on “Nuclear Weapons, Deterrence and Escalation Control: A Case of South Asia”. His paper also highlighted the recent Indo-Pak crisis. “Nuclear alarmism must be reduced in the strategic discourse as both countries have escalation control mechanisms in place that make a nuclear use highly unlikely in the times to come,” he remarked during his presentation.

The course, since 1966, has been instrumental in taking the disarmament, nonproliferation and relevant strategic debates forward, something that is becoming increasingly important in times when nuclear weapons are yet again gaining currency in international politics.
