UOL awards top researchers; Faculty of Sciences takes lion’s share
In a bid to strengthen and motivate the research culture among students and faculty, The University of Lahore (UOL) launched the Annual Research Awards on April 1, 2019 at Defence Road Main Campus, Lahore. At this maiden event, the top 22 researchers of the year 2017 received a total of one million eight hundred sixty five thousand (1,865,000 PKR) and certificates in appreciation of their research efforts. Dr. Munawar Iqbal (Assistant Professor, Chemistry) topped the list with 41 articles; followed by Prof. Dr. Syed Amir Gilani, (Allied Health Sciences, 24); Prof. Dr. Arif Malik, (IMBB, 13); Dr. Ashfaq Ahmad (Allied Health Sciences, 16) and Dr. Muhammad Iftikhar Khan (Assistant Professor, Physics, 9).

According to the Office of Research, Innovation and Commercialization (ORIC) that organized this event, the selected 22 researchers published a total of 202 national and internationally recognized journal articles with 51 percent (103) shared among the top five. Out of 22, nine of the best researchers (40 percent) were from the Faculty of Sciences; followed by six (27 percent) of Allied Health Science and three (13 percent) from Engineering and Technology. Pharmacy, Management Sciences, Social Sciences and Medicine and Dentistry followed respectively with each featuring one (5 percent).

Chairman BoG vows to focus on research and entrepreneurship
Before awarding the cash prizes and certificates to the top researchers, the Rector Prof. Dr. Mujahid Kamran appreciated the Chairman BoG, Mr. Awais Raoof, for instituting this Annual Research Award in the University. “The idea and gesture to appreciate research, is excellent and I thank the Chairman BoG for it,” he said.

While addressing the audience that constituted Deputy Chairman BoG, Pro-Rectors, Directors, Deans, HoDs and officials from ORIC, the Chairman BoG appreciated the Rector, Quality Enhancement Cell and ORIC for spearheading research activities at UOL and vowed to allocate more funds to research and entrepreneurship. “The future of universities lies in more investment in research and equipping students with entrepreneurship skills that can empower them to be productive. On top of attracting national and global research funds, we shall also strengthen our internal research funding and continue to improve ourselves in all aspects,” he revealed.

The Chairman noted that the research culture is still weak throughout the country citing examples of some of his colleagues from sister universities who were also acknowledging the poor state of research in their institutions. He said UOL is moving systematically towards world rankings by prioritizing research and publication, attracting international faculty and students, and strengthening academic programmes, teaching and community service. “We have been able to host the QS Global Universities Ranking Conference and in the near future we shall invite The Times Higher Education World University Rankings to help us improve our standards as a University in particular and Pakistan as a country,” he added.

On his part, Director ORIC, Prof. Dr. Ishtiaq Hussain revealed that UOL academic staff are continuing to attract huge research funding from HEC, PHEC, and other government agencies. “Our staff are winning international research projects that are widening their research scope and exposure,” he added while presenting the Current ORIC Statistics Report on research.

At the same occasion, Prof. Dr. M. Ashraf Sheikh (Department of Technology) was appreciated with a cash prize of 50,000 PKR for receiving an Excellent Research Paper Award during the International Conference on Recent innovations in Engineering and Technology held on May 9, 2017 in Yokohama, Japan.  His paper titled “Effect of Copper on Tensile Strength of Ductile Iron With and Without Austemering Heat Treatment” was internationally recognized based on its methodology and originality, leading to its contribution to the field of science and technology. Abdul Hannan, a Master student of Electrical and Electronics Systems at UOL’s Raiwind Road Campus, also received the same amount for his innovation of Humanoid Robot titled “Real Hero Robo-RH ROBO”, an incredible research in Robotics believed to be the first of its kind in Pakistan with technologically advanced features.

Researchers share feelings

Dr. Munawar Iqbal (Chemistry Department): “Receiving a research award from UOL is an exciting moment; especially being at the top of this prestigious academic awards list. I am so glad about this excellent recognition of my research work from the University administration. This award will insha-Allah boost my research career and I will do much better in future not only to maintain, but also to excel my research standards by exploring new horizons.”

Prof. Dr. Arif Malik (IMBB Department): “It is great for UOL to appreciate and motivate the research activities at the Campus. This gesture will always help the young researchers to keep up the research pace. My affiliation to UOL has enabled me to excel in the field of research. My work involves development and characterization of different biochemical markers who have their scope in the field of pharmaceutical and clinical sciences. I also have interest in genomics, biochemical, computational models to elucidate the mechanisms involved in abiotic/biotic stress tolerance and designing of new drugs for different diseases from natural sources with special focus on Hepatitis, different types of cancers and diabetes.”
