UOL hosts First International Seminar on QS World University Rankings
The University of Lahore, in collaboration with Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), hosted the First International Seminar on QS World University Rankings, on March 29, 2019, at its Defence Road Campus, Lahore. Twenty three (23) Pakistani universities which appear in the QS World University Rankings: Asia 2019 received the QS Ranking Certificates from the event’s chief guest and guest of honor Mr. Shafqat Mahmood (Federal Minister for Education and Professional Training) and Mr. Raja Yasir Humayun Sarfaraz (Provincial Minister for Higher Education) respectively. 

The international seminar aimed at providing a platform to the universities in Pakistan to learn about the methodologies of the QS World University Rankings as well as the inner details of globally recognized QS Stars Rating System; thus, fostering the capacity and capabilities of universities to realize the goals, envisioned by the Government of Pakistan. 
QS has been producing authoritative, independent and global rankings since 2004 and continues to lead innovation in the ranking and evaluation of Higher Education Institutions worldwide. It is regarded as one of the three most influential university rankings in the world, along with the ‘Times Higher Education World University Rankings’ and the ‘Academic Ranking of World Universities’. 

A galaxy of 22 Vice Chancellors, 100+ QEC Directors, ORIC Directors, Registrars and senior academicians representing 60+ universities across Pakistan graced the event with their presence. Mr. Ashwin Fernandes Regional Director – Middle East, North Africa & South Asia QS Intelligence Unit and Ms. Maryam Riaz Wattoo, Advisor – Ministry of Education United Arab Emirates were the guest speakers. The Patron-in-Chief, Mr. M.A. Raoof, the Chairman BoG, Mr. Awais Raoof and the Rector UOL, Prof. Dr. Mujahid Kamran welcomed the honorable guests, event speakers and the participants on behalf of the University.

The first session of the seminar was inaugurated with recitation from the Holy Qur’an, followed by the welcoming remarks of the Chairman BoG, Mr. Awais Raoof. He said “I am thankful to all of you to be part of this Seminar. These rankings will help us to move forward to recognize the areas in which we need to strengthen ourselves. With improved rankings, we shall be in position to compete for the international student body that is available”. 

Later, Mr. Sarfaraz, (the guest of honor), congratulated the universities which made their way to the list of QS Top Asian Universities 2019. He appreciated the efforts of the UOL for organizing such a productive event. He said: “Government is much interested in improving the quality of the higher education and as well, it is determined to improve the quality of graduates that we produce.” He added that; “My first priority was to get in touch with at-least one of these ranking agencies. We need to find out where we stand and then begin to improve in those parameters in which we are still weak.”

The chief guest (Mr. Mahmood) applauded the efforts of UOL and appreciated the progressive steps taken by the varsity’s for the betterment of education overall.  He said: “It’s a very good thing that our universities are being accepted at the international level. We need to move forward for better Pakistan.” He also advised universities to always update their curriculum in response to the emerging market trends and mainstream research and development. He also expressed his concern about the dilemma of unemployment despite a rapid surge in the number of graduates in the country. 
In the second session, the guest speaker, Mr. A. Fernandes discussed the workings of QS and defined the criteria and selection process of the organization for the university rankings. He also highlighted various indicators that help universities for being ranked. He said “It’s the first time that 23 universities from Pakistan are recognized in QS rankings which is a significant number and it is a moment of pride for the country to be recognized on an international level by a leading university ranking.” 
Later, Ms. Wattoo talked about QS stars assessment and external strategies for the universities. She also explained the risks associated with institution’s image and ranking and highlighted the importance of marketing for image building of the academic institutions.  The event concluded with an interactive question-answer session.
